Excerpt: State House
candidate Pat Campbell of Vancouver left the Republican Party
last year because of his unease with the party's position on
social issues,
including gay marriage.
Now a Democrat, Campbell said he expects gay marriage to be an
issue in
his campaign in the 17th District against Republican nominee Jim
Dunn.
"I think it will be a big deal. I know doorbelling, it's a
huge issue.
With some people, it's the issue," said Campbell, who
supports gay marriage.
"It would be a huge benefit for them and their families and
their children."
Campbell said he believes the issue will cost him votes. "I
think people
who are really hot on the issue are always diligent about voting,
so I think
it will have a negative effect."
Dunn said he opposes gay marriage, "but I'm sure not going
to make it a
big issue."
