Expected Events If R-71 Is Approved
The
Washington State Supreme Court, in Anderson, et. al. v. State of
Washington (2006) upheld the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) by
a 5-4 margin. Three members of that majority are expected to
defect after final enactment of SB 5688. Under this widely expected
sequence of events, the State Supreme Court would soon overturn DOMA,
and would mandate the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex
couples.

Now that Referendum 71 is going to
be on the ballot, it is likely that you will have a conversation
about it between now and November. And if you oppose the effort
to create equivalency between marriage and homosexual
relationships you will face some variation of the following
question, "how does it affect you in any way if two gay people
who love each other have legal benefits?"

State Catholic Bishops Oppose R-71
http://www.thewscc.org/statements/washington-state-catholic-conference/Final%20WSCC%20R-71_BLUE.pdf
The Catholic
Church steadfastly holds that marriage is the union between a
man and a woman, and the bishops of Washington State have
consistently supported the state’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
DOMA, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a
woman, reflects the time honored understanding of marriage by
both Church and society.
While SB 5688
is commonly identifies as the “everything but marriage” bill,
the legislative sponsors of SB 5688 specifically stated that the
bill would act as a “bridge” to change the definition of
marriage in Washington State to legalize same-sex marriage. The
bishops of Washington State therefore opposed Senate Bill 5688
and oppose Referendum 71.
