Letter from Scott Chipman, Vice President of Americans
Against Legalizing Marijuana (AALM.info),
2023
To whom it may concern,
I like Nikki Haley generally. She seemed to be a decent governor.
However, her position on "leaving the marijuana legalization issue
up to the states" indicates that she is thinking like a governor and
not as a potential president. As president she should consider:
-
Article VI, Paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution is commonly
referred to as the Supremacy Clause. The supremacy clause
requires states to follow federal law when there is a conflict
between state and federal law.
-
The US has international drug policy treaties that are being
violated by allowing states to "permit" marijuana drug dealing.
The president has a responsibility to see that international
treaties are honored.
-
The interstate commerce clause is being violated by allowing pot
sales in one state to have impact on another state and/or for
the drug to cross state lines virtually unimpeded. All states
have the right of protection by the enforcement of federal law
within the other states.
-
The federal government has multiple agencies tasked with
protecting the health and safety of the nation's citizens
including the FDA, Public Health Services Dept, CDC, and others.
Allowing pot sales and trafficking to injure citizens, children
and youth is an abrogation of the responsibilities of the
Federal Government.
Nikki Haley should not be considered a viable candidate for
president without reversing her position on marijuana policy and any
other candidate that thinks similarly should not be considered
qualified.
Sincerely,
Scott Chipman
